Tiny Beetle, Big Threat to Perths Suburbs

Client: Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD)

Project: Public awareness campaign – Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) threat

Challenge: Educate Perth’s inner-city residents about the PSHB, a destructive beetle that attacks a wide variety of trees. Raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of infestation and encourage reporting to DPIRD.

Solution: Studio Orange developed an engaging animated video to be used across platforms such as social media, outdoor advertising and other engagement efforts by the department.

Production Process:

  • Storyboarding: A detailed storyboard visualized the narrative flow, highlighting key information about the PSHB, its impact, and the reporting process.
  • Style Frame Design: Visually defining the look and feel of the animation. This established a consistent aesthetic for characters, environments, and the overall tone (informative yet engaging).
  • Animation & Refinement: Using 2D animation techniques, Studio Orange brought the storyboard and style frames to life. Iterative refinement ensured a clear, impactful final product.

Results:

  • Captivating Communication: The animation effectively captured viewers’ attention, making complex scientific information accessible and engaging.
  • Increased Awareness: The video successfully educated the public about the PSHB threat, its signs, and the importance of reporting.
  • Partnership Success: DPIRD lauded the collaboration, highlighting the video’s effectiveness in raising public awareness about their tree protection efforts.
